| 9/29 Suwanee River from White Springs to Wood Ferry |
| On the first morning of the state FSKA meeting held in White Springs a group of 5 FSKA paddlers from Tallahassee departed from the Hwy 41 Bridge Park just W of White Springs. This is a very nice and remote section of the Suwannee and the float was very much enjoyed even though the predicted 11 miles turned out to be 13. The banks in this section are generally steep but an occasional pretty sandbar can be found to rest and eat. The take out at Wood Ferry requires climbing a long steep staircase so unless you can carry your boat easily, don't go alone.
It is very much worthy of note that no one, (including the FSKA trip leader), had been able to give us any directions of any kind to the Wood Ferry Access point. This location is also not in any book I know of nor were any of the many internet sites helpful. Be sure therefore to make note of these directions.
"From White Springs take 136 about 3 miles. Turn right on 136A. Go about 3 miles until you see the sign on the right for "Wood Ferry". Turn right on to the graded road. Continue on this road always bearing left. It will eventually become a very narrow dirt road. Continue until you come to a dead end. " " Michael Lampman lampman@newact.com |
